Claire Fraser is portrayed by actress Caitriona Balfe is an Irish actress and model. She has a BA in Drama Studies from the Rathmines Conservatory of Music and Drama D.I.T. and has also trained at Warner Loughlin Studios.
Caitriona has been in several movies and can be seen in Super 8, Now You See Me, Escape Plan, and Money Monster among other titles.

In Season One, we meet Claire She is an only child and her parents died when she was very young. She was raised by her uncle, who took her all over the world. She's a warm, practical and independent nurse in World War II who finds herself in the Scottish Highlands in the mid-18th century. In the 20th century she is married to Frank Randall, but when she goes up to the Standing Stone at Craigh Na Dub she slips back in time to the 18th century where she's nearly raped by her husbands ancestor, rescued by some highlanders and taken to Castle Leoch. She meets and becomes friends with a young Scotsman named Jamie and the local healer and rumored witch Geillis Duncan. After Dougal takes her to the Garrison and she's beaten by Randall Dougal convinces her the only way to stay free of Randall is to marry Jamie. Claire reluctantly gives in and realizes this means consummating the marriage.
Claire is a gifted natural physician and an amateur botanist. But later is almost burned as a witch. Geillis, a fellow time traveler, confesses to being the witch and Jamie whisks Claire away from the mob. After telling Jamie, she's a time traveler he takes her to Craigh na Dun but she decides not to return to Frank because she loves Jamie. Jamie and Claire go to Jamie's family home where they are happy until Jamie is captured by the English. Jamie's sister Jenny helps Claire track Jamie, but Jenny must return to her newborn child. Murtagh and Claire travel together putting on shows to try and draw Jamie out but which is working until he again runs into the English and this time is taken to Wentworth. Claire gets inside but is prevented from rescuing her love by Randall who is willing to harm her. Jamie gives himself to Randall freely if Claire is safely sent away. Before her departure Claire tells Randall the day of his death. Later, Claire and the MacKenzie's free Jamie and Claire sets about the mending of his body and then his soul. In the end the two flee to France, with the news that they are to be parents.
In Season Two, arriving in France with a mission to infiltrate the Jacobite movement, Claire is determined to alter the course of history, save the Highland people, and secure a future for the child she carries with the man she loves. Claire befriends Frank's six-times-great grandmother who is with her when she is attacked on the streets of Paris. Claire is unscathed but Mary has been raped. Claire tried to help Mary but ends up hurting her when she puts a stop to Alex Randall and Mary's relationship. Claire miscarries their baby, Faith, after rushing to stop the duel between Jamie and Jack Randall that could end Franks very existence. When Claire returns home after her miscarriage it is to learn Jamie is in the bastille. Claire isn't inclined to help free him until she learns from Fergus that Jamie broke his word and dueled with Randall because Randall raped Fergus. Claire goes to the King for Jamie's freedom and the King exacts a steep price. Claire uses her reputation to suss out if St. Germain or Master Raymond are involved in the dark arts which results in St. Germain's death.
Jamie returns home and he and Claire say their goodbyes to Faith before returning home to Scotland and Lallybroch. Their peace is short lived when Prince Charles decides to start a rebellion and signs Jamie up as a co-conspirator. Jamie and Claire gather the men and go to Jamie's grandfather Lord Lovat for support before meeting the Prince. Jamie and Dougal clash over rank, Jamie is attacked by a young British soldier and every decision brings the Clans closer to ruin.
Claire assist Mary with Alex's medical care but Alex is a terminal case. Claire comes face to face with Jack Randall again who asks for her help but Claire must deliver the bad news to her enemy. Claire soon learns Mary is pregnant with Alex's child and because he is dying Alex wishes Jack to wed Mary to give the child a name.
Claire and Jamie discuss poisoning Prince Charles on the eve of battle in hopes of preventing the Battle of Culloden but Dougal overhears and is determined to kill Claire. Jamie intervenes and they both have a hand in killing Dougal. Rupert finds them but gives Jamie enough time to see Claire safely away before he is to return to die on the battlefield.
Claire and Jamie go to the Stones where they say their goodbyes and Jamie sends Claire back to Frank.
In the 1960s, Claire and Brianna come to Inverness to see Rev. Wakefield only to learn of his death. They pay their respects and spend time with Roger. When Brianna learns she can not be the biological daughter of Frank Randall, Claire is forced to tell Brianna the truth though her daughter doesn't believe her. Claire tries to stop Geillis Duncan, Gillian Edgars, from going back in time but all three of them are too late to stop Gillian and Bree realizes her mother's story is true. Roger then tells Claire one of the five officers of the Lovat regime survived Culloden and they know the names of the four who died. The one to survive was Jamie Fraser. Claire is stunned and elated that Jame survived.
Claire is reeling from the knowledge that the love of her life hasn't died. Now she must choose between the past and the future and her two loves, her true love or her daughter the product of that love.
In the 1940s, Claire is in Boston, now the proud mother to Brianna who looks amazingly like her father. While trying to put a life together with Frank and move on from the loss of Jamie, Claire comes to realize she is meant to be a doctor. Frank is pleased with her choice to go to medical school but agrees to take Brianna to his work place while Claire is at school.
In the 1960s, Claire returns to Boston to tie up the loose ends of her life while contemplating how different she is since the last time Jamie saw her. Claire takes the time to make provisions for Brianna and leave her good friend Joe Abernathy in charge of looking after her daughter. Claire remembers her last encounter with Frank when he told her he was leaving her and moving to England with Bree and their fighter where she reveals she's always known about his infidelity. That same night, Frank is killed in a car crash which is what leads to Claire taking Bree to Scotland.
Claire goes back to Scotland to make plans for the trip through the stones. Once, Bree and Roger have found Jamie in Edinburgh under the name A. Malcolm, Claire makes the hard choice to travel through time, leaving her daughter in the future.
Once in 1766, Claire makes her way from the Stones to Edinburgh where she finds Jamie in his print shop. Jamie takes Claire upstairs to his room so he can change his ale soaked pants and Claire gives him the gift of photograph's of Brianna. Jamie is overcome by emotion and breaks down, asking Claire what his daughter's name is and is taken aback at what an awful name she's been given. Claire explains that Jamie wanted her to name their son Brian after Jamie's father but since their child was a girl she named her Brianna.
Jamie and Claire go to a tavern for dinner where they find Jamie's acquaintance Mr. Willoughby. They then head to Madame Jeanne's establishment which Claire realizes is a brothel. Jamie apparently has a permanent room there and when Claire questions Jamie about it learns he is also a smuggler. The next day they are surprised by a visit from Ian who is looking for Young Ian. Jamie and Ian go off to find Young Ian who appears at the brothel and assumes Claire is a prostitute who knows both his uncle and father. Fergus then appears and is overjoyed and Claire's return. When they return to the print shop they find it engulfed in flames and Young Ian on the second story. Jamie saves Young Ian and they all return to Lallybroch (after a brief smuggling operation).
Back at Lallybroch, Claire's welcome is somewhat chilly when she sees Jenny again. Jamie and Claire retire upstairs but are later interrupted by a girl calling Jamie Daddy who finds them together. And then Laoghaire appears and Claire learns Jamie has married Laoghaire and her daughters call Jamie Da. Claire leaves Lallybroch intent on returning to the future but is waylaid when Young Ian finds her and tells her after she left Laoghaire returned and shot Jamie. Young Ian tells Claire Jamie is dying and she must return to Lallybroch. Claire returns to Lallybroch where Jamie says his goodbyes but Claire had brought 20th century penicillin which she administers to Jamie who heals rapidly.
Jamie then proceeds to absolve the marriage between Laoghaire and himself while making sure she and her daughters are provided for. To pay this off they decide to use the seal's treasure which is on an island off the coast. Jamie, Young Ian and Claire go to retrieve the gold. Young Ian swims out to the island but a ship appears to take the treasure and Young Ian along with it.
Jamie and Claire set sail for the Caribbean to find Young Ian. On their adventures they comes across slave traders, a British press gang and pirates but Jamie and Claire arrive in Jamaica, after separation and being reunited again, where they discover the Governor is an old friend and that a woman named Abernathy maybe holding Young Ian. Claire and Jamie soon discover Mistress Abernathy is none other than Geillis Duncan. Geillis is determined to sacrifice Young Ian so she can travel through time and in trying to stop her Claire kills Geillis. They all flee Jamaica and are caught in a terrible storm and sinks their ship. Jamie, Claire and Young Ian are washed up on the shores of the Colonies.
Jamie and Claire make it to the Colonies after rescuing Young Ian. There is no turning back so they must make the best of it and it just so happens Jamie's Aunt Jocasta lives in North Carolina. Jamie is determined to make a place in the Colonies for his family. Surprises await when Jamie meets his time traveling daughter and discovers her own trials and their results.
Jamie enlists the help of Young Ian to ward off threats to his daughter and family and in the process loses the nephew who is like a son to him.
Jamie has come to terms with his new son-in-law and is totally besotted by his grandson. Now the Fraser's head to the Clan Gathering where politics, religion and weddings are the name of the game.
With the start of tensions in the Colonies, Jamie must decide when it is the right time to declare for the American Colonists against the British.
Jamie's life is threaten when he's bit by a snake and new settlers come to Fraser's Ridge.
It finally seems like things are settling down, when violence comes to the Ridge in the form of a gang who attacks Marsali and abducts Claire. Jamie won't stand for it and woe to anyone who harms his Sassenach.
After saving Claire, Jamie and Claire's peace is shaken when Claire falls ill and Malva Christie claims the child she carries is Jamie's. But when Malva turns up murdered, Claire is the prime suspect.
Jamie and Claire join the American Revolution. They see famous battles, famous historical figures and Jamie's British son. But pain hits home when Jamie and Claire return to Scotland to bring a distant relative home only to find Ian ill and Jenny at odds with Claire. Jamie stays in Scotland to remain by Ian's side in his final days while Claire and Young Ian return to the Colonies.
After Ian's death, Jamie and Jenny go to France, planning to sail to the Colonies only to be left behind by their ship. Unbeknownst to Lord John and Claire who find out the ship Jamie and Jenny were supposed to be one went down with all souls lost.
Jamie returns to the Colonies to find his wife married to Lord John, his son Fergus's family in danger, his friend Lord John claiming carnal knowledge of his wife, and his illegitimate son realizing exactly who his father is. Now Jamie has to navigate through pain, plots and paternal hatred all while trying to get home to the Ridge and work with George Washington.
